This afternoon, visit Phsar Thmey (Central Market), a large market constructed in 1937 in the shape of a dome with four arms branching out into vast hallways with countless stalls of goods. The four wings of this gigantic yellow dome are teeming with stalls that sell goods ranging from gold and silver, antique coins, money exchange, books, flowers, food, fabrics, shoes, souvenirs, seafood, and countless other products. Continue to visit Wat Phnom, “Mountain Pagoda,” a Buddhist temple that symbolizes the name of Phnom Penh, located on a hill. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was erected in 1372 to house four statues of Buddha deposited here by the waters of the Mekong River and discovered by Lady Penh. Enjoy your nice breakfast at the hotel. We set off at 08:30 am to visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom, which was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall, drawing a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces. On each side of the entrance path, a row of 54 gods or demons is holding the sacred Naga snake. Followed by Ta Prohm temple, built in the mid-12th to early 13th centuries. Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes Ta Prohm one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples.

Continue to visit the biggest religious temple in the world: the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple. Built by Suryavarman II, in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat was constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing Mount Meru, home of the gods. Considered a masterpiece of Khmer architecture, this Vishnuite temple is the King’s funerary temple. These are the main reasons that explain the west exposure of the temple. Inside the temple, the walls are covered by carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II made during his reign. Stay at this magic place until the sun sets and witness how the warm evening light changes the appearance of the 2000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. After breakfast, we’ll travel through the countryside with green & yellow scenery depending on the season by passing many villages, schools, pagodas, paddy rice fields, palm trees, Mango & Cashew farms, etc. We stop to visit Prasat Banteay Srei, a well-carved and well-preserved Banteay Srei. The detailed reliefs on this smaller sandstone structure are regarded as the finest and most skillfully crafted in Cambodia. Banteay Srei has only been accessible since the late 1990s, when the Khmer Rouge left the area. On the way back, stop at Pradark Village, where you can see villagers making palm sugar, a traditional handicraft sold to tourists. It’s a great opportunity for you to see local people living in the countryside and experience their daily struggles. If time permits, visit the Banteay Samre, with elaborate architecture and exceptional carvings.

At noon, visit Preah Khan temple. Built by King Jayavarman VII, Preah Khan is, like Ta Prohm, a place of towered enclosures and shoulder-hugging corridors. Unlike Ta Prohm, however, Preah Khan is in a reasonable state of preservation, and ongoing restoration efforts should maintain and even improve this situation. Next is Neak Pean, a fountain (built in the middle of a pool and representing the paradisiacal Himalayan mountain-lake), Ta Som, Eastern Mebon, guarded at its corner by stone figures of harnessed elephants, some of which are still in a reasonable state of preservation, and Pre Rup, the mountain-temple. On the way, about 15km from Siem Reap, make a first stop at Angkor Silk Farm, where you will enjoy a free tour (40 – 50 min) starting in lush mulberry plantations, which feed the silkworms until final production. All silk products are entirely handcrafted and reflect the talents of the local Khmer women. You may just want to spend a few of your travel dollars on a beautiful krama (scarf), or maybe two.
