This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall, drawing a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces. On each side of the entrance path, a row of 54 gods or demons is holding the sacred Naga snake. Followed by Ta Prohm temple, built in the mid-12th to early 13th centuries. Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes Ta Prohm one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples.

Continue to visit the biggest religious temple in the world: the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple. Built by Suryavarman II, in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat was constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing Mount Meru, home of the gods. Considered a masterpiece of Khmer architecture, this Vishnuite temple is the King’s funerary temple. These are the main reasons that explain the west exposure of the temple. Inside the temple, the walls are covered by carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II made during his reign. With an indication of the distinctiveness of this little gem of a temple, it is also honorably called the jewel in the crown of classical Khmer Art. Continue your trip to Kampong Phluk Floating Village, located 33 km north-south of Siem Reap. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3000 inhabitants between them. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife, including crab-eating macaques. During the dry season, when the lake is low (March – July), the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6- 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year, many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season, when the water level rises (Aug – February), the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water. After breakfast, continue your trip out of town through the Cambodian countryside, passing picturesque landscapes of green and golden fields (depending on the season), dotted with traditional villages, local schools, pagodas, rice paddies, palm trees, as well as mango and cashew farms.

Our first stop is Banteay Srei Temple, one of the most beautifully carved and best-preserved temples in Cambodia. Known as the “Citadel of Women,” Banteay Srei is admired for its intricate pink sandstone carvings, considered some of the finest and most detailed in the country. Once inaccessible due to conflict, the temple has only been open to visitors since the late 1990s.

Continue to Kulen Mountain, a sacred site and the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. Begin a short trek to visit the River of a Thousand Lingams, where countless carvings of Hindu deities and Shiva Lingas are etched into the riverbed. These sacred carvings, believed to be nearly a thousand years old, are said to bless the flowing water. Climb to the hilltop Buddhist pagoda to admire the giant Reclining Buddha, impressively carved from a single sandstone boulder. Continue your trip to Kampong Phluk Floating Village, located 33 km north-south of Siem Reap. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3000 inhabitants between them. The flooded mangrove forest surrounding the area is home to a variety of wildlife, including crab-eating macaques. During the dry season, when the lake is low (March – July), the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6- 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year, many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season, when the water level rises (Aug – February), the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water.
